 Winter's Cost Some flowers paying the cost of winter's early arrival. If memories of my youth are accurate winter typically arrives one day before Halloween. It forced us to cover our costumes with heavy coats, unzipping at each door to expose the skeleton, pirate, or princess within. But this year it's not even going to wait for October. If you are a skier then you welcome the early arrival of the snow. If you're ready for the end of a scorching hot summer or water worries then you may welcome the cold wet stuff. I like the heat, the sun, and the long days of summer. I welcome the appearance of flowers and blue sky in the spring. I like the crisp musty air of fall and the turning of the leaves. I dread and despise the gray skies and short days of winter; for me it's only purpose is to increase my appreciation of the other seasons. Like every other year, I will make the best of it. Sledding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing ,Christmas lights, snowball fights and such will be on the agenda. I do have an appreciation of a snow/frost covered field, seeing your breath, and icicles. However, my heart will never be in it, it hibernates until spring.
